Dìdi (弟弟)

Set in 2008, Dìdi (弟弟) follows Chris Wang, a thirteen-year-old Taiwanese American boy living in Fremont, California, during the final weeks of summer before he starts high school. With his father away on business and his older sister Vivian focused on leaving for college, Chris spends much of his time clashing with his mother, Chungsing, who also bears the strain of her mother-in-law's constant criticism. Eager to reinvent himself, Chris sets out to learn skateboarding and how to talk to girls, while his Taiwanese heritage sets him apart from the kids around him.

The film is written and directed by Sean Wang, who also produced it with Carlos López Estrada and Josh Peters. It is his first narrative feature, followed the same year by the documentary Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó. Izaac Wang plays Chris, with Joan Chen as his mother, Shirley Chen as Vivian, Chang Li Hua as Nai Nai, and Macaela Parker as Madi; thirty cast members and fifty-nine crew are credited. The film runs 94 minutes and took about 5 million dollars worldwide.

On IMDb it holds a 7.3 rating from roughly 16,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.2 from about 237 votes. The much larger IMDb sample suggests a widely seen film that viewers rate favourably, and the two audience scores are closely aligned.
