Short description

This comedy and drama consists of three separate stories set in the United States, Ireland, and France. The narratives explore the strained connections between adult children and their distant parents, as well as the friction between siblings. In the first segment, a brother and sister visit their reclusive father in the American northeast. The second part follows two daughters meeting their demanding mother, a writer in Dublin. The third story involves twins in Paris who deal with the emotional impact of their parents' deaths.

Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, this is the 14th film in his chronology, following the 2019 movie The Dead Don't Die. The ensemble cast includes Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, and Vicky Krieps. Produced by several companies across Europe and the United States, the film earned 8 million USD at the worldwide box office.

Audience reception is moderately positive, with a rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb from 7,800 votes and 6.4/10 on TMDB from 341 votes. These scores are slightly lower than the 7/10 rating provided by film critics based on 110 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to director and screenwriter Jim Jarmusch, gathering material for a screenplay takes a long time, sometimes several years, while the actual writing process usually lasts about a month. It all began with the idea of casting Tom Waits and Adam Driver as father and son. Jarmusch wanted to emphasize the difference between them—not as real people, but as fictional characters.
  • Jim Jarmusch, by his own admission, is a fan of the television game show 'Jeopardy!' and, specifically, its host Maya Bialik. He imagined Bialik in the role of Emily, the sister of the character played by Adam Driver. After that, he envisioned Vicky Krieps and Cate Blanchett as sisters who were 'completely unlike one another,' and Charlotte Rampling as their mother.
  • The action of the third and final storyline unfolds in Paris, the second most significant city for director and screenwriter Jim Jarmusch. Having worked with India Moore and Luca Sabba before, Jarmusch didn't hesitate to cast them as twins in the final part of the film.
  • According to the script, the storyline of the 'Mother' chapter was supposed to take place in London; however, director and screenwriter Jim Jarmusch preferred to film in Dublin (a decision driven by tax incentives provided by Irish law). He found it amusing that the two daughters of Charlotte Rampling's character travel to Dublin to be closer to their writer mother, yet despite their good intentions, they hardly see her.
