Short description
Florence is in love with David and wants her father Guillaume to meet him. David does not return her feelings and would rather steer her toward his friend Willy. All four of them come together at a restaurant set in an isolated spot, where the encounter takes its course.
Quentin Dupieux directed and wrote The Second Act, which reached cinemas in May 2024 and runs eighty minutes. It is the thirteenth of the sixteen features he has directed, following Daaaaaalí! and preceding The Piano Accident. Léa Seydoux plays Florence, Vincent Lindon plays Guillaume, Louis Garrel is David and Raphaël Quenard appears as Willy, with Manuel Guillot and Françoise Gazio also in the cast. Hugo Sélignac produced the French production.
The film took in roughly four million dollars worldwide, a modest figure for a release of this scale. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from about 4,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1 from some 320 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 from 39 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a similar level of response from both groups.
What's left behind the scenes
- During filming, work on the movie was kept secret. The owner of the airfield didn't even know about Vincent Lindon's presence on set (he played Guillaume). It was only a month after filming that Léa Seydoux (who played Florence) let slip that she had spent two weeks filming with Quentin Dupieux, and that's how everyone found out about the new movie.
- The entire film was shot in the Dordogne department in southeastern France. Filming took less than three weeks in December 2023. The airfield building was used as the restaurant, and the runway was disguised to resemble an abandoned highway.
