Blast from the Past

In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a paranoid but brilliant scientist named Calvin Webber becomes convinced that a plane crash near his Los Angeles home is a nuclear attack. He seals himself, his wife Helen and their newborn son Adam inside a sophisticated fallout shelter, where the family remains for 35 years. When the shelter's time lock finally opens in 1997, Adam emerges into a Los Angeles utterly changed from the world his parents described, and sets out to find supplies and a suitable wife while navigating a society he barely understands.

Hugh Wilson directed and co-wrote the film, which followed Guarding Tess and The First Wives Club in his filmography. Brendan Fraser plays Adam, with Alicia Silverstone as Eve, the skeptical young woman he meets above ground, and Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek as his parents. Dave Foley and Joey Slotnick appear in supporting roles.

Released in 1999, the film cost about 35 million dollars and earned roughly 40 million worldwide, a modest return. It holds a 6.7 rating on IMDb from 77,000 votes and a 6.8 on TMDB from 1,278 votes, while critics gave it 6.2 from 80 reviews, placing it slightly below the audience scores.
