Short description

Set in the small Swedish town of Åmål, where little happens and many young people want to leave, Show Me Love follows two teenage girls at the same school. Elin is popular, restless and tired of her surroundings; Agnes has been lonely since her family moved there and keeps her feelings to herself. A kiss at a birthday party, first taken as a dare, draws the two together and pushes Elin to consider what Agnes actually means to her.

Released in 1998, the film was written and directed by Lukas Moodysson and was the first feature he directed, ahead of Lilya 4-ever, Mammoth and Together 99. Alexandra Dahlström plays Elin and Rebecka Liljeberg plays Agnes, with Erica Carlson, Mathias Rust, Stefan Hörberg and Josefine Nyberg among a credited cast of 24. Lars Jönsson produced; the production involved Swedish and Danish companies, including Zentropa Entertainments.

The film runs 89 minutes and mixes comedy, drama and romance. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 7.5/10 from 44 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating is 7.1/10 from 614 votes, a narrower gap than is typical for a story built around young characters and shifting allegiances.

What's left behind the scenes

According to Elena Kiper, one of the producers of the t.A.T.u. group, it was Moodysson's film that inspired the idea of using a lesbian image to promote the project. The film's international English title, 'Show Me Love,' coincides with the title of one of t.A.T.u.'s songs.
In 2005, a theatrical adaptation of this film was staged in Basel, Switzerland.
In Denmark, the film is recommended to teachers by 'Det Danske Filminstitut' for use in the school curriculum.
The final scene, where Elin and Agnes walk out of the school toilet together, is a literal coming out – in English, the expression 'coming out' (disclosure, outing) or 'coming out of the closet' describes the process of a person voluntarily and openly acknowledging their homosexuality.
