Infernal Affairs II is a Hong Kong crime thriller that serves as a prequel to Infernal Affairs, moving the story back several years. The murder of a Triad boss sets off a struggle for control of the underworld, as rivals inside the organisation and the police alike position themselves for what comes next. The dead man's son, a businessman previously uninvolved in his father's affairs, steps in to take charge, surprising those who expected the throne to be claimed by others. A young officer is sent undercover into the gang to watch the new leadership, while the Triads place an informer of their own inside the police force, leaving both sides exposed from within as the handover of Hong Kong approaches.
Andrew Lau Wai-Keung directed, with Alan Mak; the two also wrote the screenplay with Felix Chong Man-keung, and Lau produced. It followed Infernal Affairs (2002) and preceded Infernal Affairs III (2003) in Lau's filmography, and it is the second entry in Mak's directing credits. The cast includes Shawn Yue, Edison Chen, Francis Ng, Eric Tsang, Carina Lau and Anthony Wong, among 87 credited performers.
The film took about 3 million dollars at the worldwide box office on release in October 2003. On IMDb it holds 7.2/10 from 21,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.3/10 from 489 votes, with audiences rating it considerably higher than the critics' score of 6.2/10 from eight reviews.
