Casshern is set in a world ravaged by a fifty-year war. Much of the planet has been left uninhabitable and the surviving population suffers from incurable diseases. Dr. Azuma, a leading geneticist, develops a "neo-cell" procedure intended to heal the sick and replace damaged body parts. Instead, the experiment produces a new race of mutant beings who see humanity as a threat and declare war on their creators.
Dr. Azuma's son Tetsuya, killed in the earlier conflict, is revived through the same technology, reborn with extraordinary abilities and placed in the path of the mutant army. The film is a live-action adaptation of the 1973 Japanese anime series of the same name, and the main cast includes Yûsuke Iseya as Tetsuya, Kumiko Aso as Luna Kozuki, Akira Terao as Dr. Kotaro Azuma, Kanako Higuchi as Midori Azuma, Fumiyo Kohinata as Dr. Kozuki and Hiroyuki Miyasako as Akubon.
Kazuaki Kiriya directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Dai Sato and Shoutarou Suga. It was his first feature, followed later by Last Knights and From the End of the World. Produced on a budget of about 6 million dollars, it earned roughly 12 million worldwide. On TMDB it holds 5.9/10 from 272 votes, while critics rate it 6.4/10 from 11 reviews.
