Short description
A man in dark glasses is taken to a Manhattan psychiatric hospital after behaving strangely in a railway station. He calls himself Prot and says he comes from a distant planet called K-PAX. The psychiatrist assigned to him, Dr. Mark Powell, tries to convince him otherwise, but Prot proves unusually persuasive and displays abilities that are hard to explain. Meanwhile, word of Prot's claimed departure spreads among the other patients, and several of them want to go with him. Powell's efforts to settle the question of who Prot really is begin to unsettle his own confidence in the line between reality and delusion.
Iain Softley directed the film, his third feature after Backbeat and Hackers, from a screenplay by Charles Leavitt. Jeff Bridges plays Dr. Powell and Kevin Spacey plays Prot, with Mary McCormack, Alfre Woodard, David Patrick Kelly and Saul Williams among the supporting cast. It is a co-production between Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Released in October 2001, the film runs 120 minutes. It had a budget of 68 million US dollars and took about 65 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.4 out of 10 from around 202,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 out of 10 from roughly 2,900 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 141 reviews sits below both audience scores, indicating that viewers responded to the film more warmly than reviewers did.
What's left behind the scenes
- Throughout the film, in almost all scenes, you can see light flares. They are especially frequent in Dr. Powell's office during his conversations with Prota.
- Will Smith was originally considered for the role of Prot, and Kevin Spacey was to be cast as Dr. Powell.
- At the 54th minute, reflections of people can be seen in Prota’s glasses, but some of them, such as Dr. Powell, are standing behind him, so their reflections shouldn't be visible in his glasses.
- The photograph of Robert Porter in the yearbook is actually a photograph of Kevin Spacey in the Chatsworth High School yearbook of 1977.
- Prota's sunglasses were borrowed from Bono, the vocalist of U2.
- The scene where Prota eats an entire banana was shot 27 times.
- Prot's favorite movie is "Man of Steel." Jeff Bridges starred in it, playing the role of Dr. Powell.
- The film is set in New York, but the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, located in Los Angeles, can be seen from the windows of Dr. Powell’s office.
- There is a micro-scene after the end credits. Dr. Mark Powell is looking at the stars through a telescope on his lawn in front of the house at night and smiles mysteriously.
- Prot's favorite movie is "Man of Steel" (1984). Jeff Bridges starred in it, playing the role of Dr. Powell. The Man of Steel, like Kevin Spacey's character, loved earthly food, but preferred pies to fruit. Interestingly, after the incident with the watering can, Prot talks about the smell of apple pie.
- The film is based on Gene Brewer's novel 'K-PAX' (1995).
