A London couple, Roger and Anita, meet through their Dalmatians and eventually marry. When their dogs have a litter of puppies, Anita's employer, the wealthy fashion designer Cruella de Vil, becomes fixated on acquiring the pups for their spotted fur. After Anita refuses to sell them, the puppies are taken from the house, setting Roger, Anita and their dogs on a search that draws in a much larger group of Dalmatians.
The film is a live-action family comedy directed by Stephen Herek, the seventh of the nineteen features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Mr. Holland's Opus and Holy Man. John Hughes wrote the screenplay and produced with Ricardo Mestres. Glenn Close plays Cruella de Vil, with Jeff Daniels as Roger, Joely Richardson as Anita, Joan Plowright as Nanny, and Hugh Laurie and Mark Williams as Jasper and Horace. The credited cast numbers twenty-four, with fifty-five credited crew members.
Made for 54 million dollars, the film took 321 million dollars worldwide, a strong commercial result for a family release. On IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from around 124,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 out of 10 from roughly 3,700 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from thirty-five reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
