Camille Claudel

Camille Claudel is a French biographical drama about the sculptor Camille Claudel, the sister of the writer Paul Claudel, and her relationship with Auguste Rodin. Encouraged by her father and brother, she pursues her ambition to work in Rodin's studio, where she becomes his apprentice and eventually his lover and muse. Their bond is intense and creatively productive, but Rodin's reluctance to commit drives a wedge between them. Camille then sets out to build an independent career as a woman in a field dominated by men, a struggle that leaves her increasingly isolated.

Bruno Nuytten directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay he wrote with Marilyn Goldin. Isabelle Adjani, who also produced alongside Christian Fechner, plays Camille opposite Gérard Depardieu as Rodin. Laurent Grévill, Alain Cuny, Roch Leibovici and Madeleine Robinson appear in supporting roles. The film runs 175 minutes.

Critics were markedly more enthusiastic than general audiences: on the basis of a small number of reviews the critics' rating stands at 8.4 out of 10, while on TMDB the film holds 6.8 out of 10 from 157 votes. Its worldwide box office take was modest. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
