Short description
Set in Shanghai during the Japanese occupation, Fist of Fury centres on Chen Zhen, a martial arts student who returns to his former school to learn that his revered teacher has died. The circumstances of the death do not sit right with him, and his suspicions fall on members of a rival Japanese dojo, whose students have long harassed the Chinese school. His efforts to establish the truth and settle the score set him against both the rival school and the local authorities, forcing him into hiding as he tries to prove what happened to his master. Bruce Lee stars as Chen Zhen, with Nora Miao, Maria Yi, James Tien Chuen, Feng Tien and Huang Tsung-Hsun among a credited cast of fifty.
The film was directed by Lo Wei, who also wrote the screenplay, with Raymond Chow Man-Wai producing for Concord Productions and Orange Sky Golden Harvest. It followed The Big Boss in Lo Wei's filmography and was succeeded by New Fist of Fury, To Kill with Intrigue, Spiritual Kung Fu and Dragon Fist, among the films he directed after it.
Released in March 1972, Fist of Fury runs 108 minutes and takes in roughly 100 million dollars worldwide, a substantial return for a Hong Kong production of its era. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 37,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 out of 10 from about 1,117 votes, indicating a widely favourable audience response. A critics' rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 18 reviews places it somewhat lower among reviewers than with the public.
What's left behind the scenes
- The somersault in the duel scene between Chen Zhen and his teacher in the dojo was not performed by Bruce Lee, but by his stunt double.
- The confusion with titles continued with this Bruce Lee film. American distributors once again decided to change the original title and revisited their idea of "The Chinese Connection," hoping to capitalize on the success of "The French Connection" (1971).
- The film is set in 1908, although Huo Yuanjia died in 1910.
- According to some sources, the real-life prototype of Chen Zhen did not engage in a final showdown with the Japanese occupying forces but successfully fled Shanghai.
- Yoshida's hakama is worn backwards.
- Jackie Chan appeared in an uncredited cameo role in this film. He played one of the kung fu school students in the crowd scene during the unexpected Japanese attack. He also served as a stunt double for the actor playing the Japanese villain, Mr. Suzuki, in the film's final scene. It was he who receives the iconic flying kick from Bruce Lee's character. In this scene, Jackie flew much further than planned and fell from a great height. Bruce Lee was the first to rush to check on the stuntman's condition.
- Filming of the movie began on October 17, 1971.
- The original title translates to “Schools of Chivalry,” while “Fist of Fury” is the title given to the film by American distributors after Bruce Lee’s previous film, “Fists of Fury Cheng Chen,” was renamed “The Big Boss”.
