Set during the final years of the First World War in Northern Italy, this drama follows two childhood friends and university classmates, Stefano and Giulio, who work together in a military clinic. While Stefano focuses on curing wounded soldiers and exposing those who fake injuries or self-harm to avoid returning to the front, Giulio adopts a more tolerant approach, secretly helping some soldiers secure medical exemptions. Their professional tension is mirrored by a personal rivalry for the affection of Anna, a determined nurse. The conflict between the two men reaches a turning point in 1918 with the arrival of the Spanish flu epidemic.
The film was directed by Gianni Amelio, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Alberto Taraglio. In his filmography, this work follows Lord of the Ants (2022) and precedes No Pain (2026). The movie stars Alessandro Borghi, Gabriel Montesi, and Federica Rosellini, with a credited cast of 34 people. Produced by companies including RAI Cinema, the project had a budget of 12 million USD but earned 1 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is moderate, with a rating of 6.1/10 on IMDb based on 806 votes and a score of 6.5/10 on TMDB from 109 votes.
