Michael J. Fox plays Ben Stone, a plastic surgeon who leaves a hospital in Washington, D.C., for a wealthy practice in Beverly Hills. Driving across the country, he crashes in the small Southern town of Grady, where a judge sentences him to serve as the local doctor for a set number of hours as punishment. Ben expects to finish his sentence and move on, but the townspeople take to him, and he grows close to Lou, the ambulance driver, which leaves him weighing his planned career against a life in Grady. Julie Warner, Barnard Hughes, Woody Harrelson, David Ogden Stiers and Frances Sternhagen are among the cast.

The film is a comedy with a romantic thread, directed by Michael Caton-Jones. It followed his first two features, Scandal and Memphis Belle, and preceded This Boy's Life, Rob Roy, The Jackal, City by the Sea, Basic Instinct 2, Shooting Dogs and Asher. Jeffrey Price, Peter S. Seaman and Daniel Pyne wrote the screenplay, with Deborah D. Johnson and Susan Solt producing for Warner Bros. Pictures.
