The Presidio follows Jay Austin, a San Francisco police detective who once served in the military police and left the service after a dispute with his commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Alan Caldwell. Years later, a killing on the Presidio army base in San Francisco forces the two men, who still dislike each other, to work the case together. The situation is complicated by Austin's relationship with Caldwell's daughter, Donna.
Peter Hyams directed the film, the seventh of the seventeen features he directed in chronological order, coming between Running Scared and Narrow Margin, from a screenplay by Larry Ferguson. Sean Connery plays Caldwell, Mark Harmon plays Austin, and Meg Ryan plays Donna, with Jack Warden, Mark Blum and Dana Gladstone among the credited cast of forty-five, supported by a crew of seventy-nine. Paramount released the film, which runs ninety-seven minutes and mixes action, crime, mystery and thriller elements.
The film took about 20 million dollars worldwide at the box office. Audiences rate it 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB, based on 384 votes, while critics give it 5.2 out of 10 from 32 reviews, a modest gap that places the two responses fairly close together.
