Bad Girls
Short description
Four women working in a Colorado saloon are forced to flee after Cody Zamora kills a customer who was attacking her friend Anita. With the law pursuing them and a hanging sentence waiting if they are caught, Cody and her companions Anita, Eileen and Lily head north, hoping to start over and take possession of a piece of land. Their plan to build a new life runs into trouble when Cody tries to withdraw her savings and the bank is robbed by a gang led by Kid Jarrett, a man from her past. Stripped of the money they needed, the women have to defend themselves in a territory where nothing comes easily.
Bad Girls was directed by Jonathan Kaplan and released in 1994, arriving between Love Field and Brokedown Palace in a filmography that began with Night Call Nurses in 1972 and includes The Accused and Unlawful Entry. The screenplay is by Ken Friedman and Yolande Turner, and the picture was produced by Albert S. Ruddy, Charles Finch and André E. Morgan. Madeleine Stowe plays Cody, with Mary Stuart Masterson as Anita, Andie MacDowell as Eileen, Drew Barrymore as Lily, James Russo as Kid Jarrett and James Le Gros as William Tucker.
The film is a Western with romance at its center. It grossed around 15 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.2 from more than 13,000 votes, and on TMDB it rates 5.3 from 275 votes. A critics' score of 3.6 from 24 reviews places it below both audience figures.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Tamara Davis was slated to direct and work from a script written by Yolanda Turner and Becky Johnston. However, after a few weeks, the studio decided they disliked the direction the film was taking and halted production. Jonathan Kaplan replaced Davis as director, the script was rewritten, and the four actresses cast in the lead roles were sent to learn how to shoot, lasso, and ride horses.
- In one episode, agents of the Pinkerton Detective Agency state they are searching for a fugitive from Colorado. Colorado gained statehood in 1876, approximately 15 years before the events depicted in the film.
- James LeGros and Madeleine Stowe would later star together again in the series "Revenge" (2011-2015).
- There is no blood on Cody’s face, as played by Madeleine Stowe, when she enters the hero’s shelter near the end of the film, but when she comes face to face with him, her face is smeared with blood.
