8 Seconds tells the story of Lane Frost, a rodeo cowboy who rises through the ranks of professional bull riding to become world champion in 1987. Raised in Utah, he learns the craft from his father and competes alongside his friends Tuff Hedeman and Cody Lambert, one of whom becomes a rival in the arena. The film follows his marriage to Kellie and the demands that fame and competition place on the people around him, building toward a career defined by both success and danger in a sport where a ride lasts only eight seconds.
John G. Avildsen directed from a screenplay by Monte Merrick, with Michael Shamberg producing. The film came late in a run of sports and underdog dramas for Avildsen, arriving after The Power of One and following the earlier Rocky and The Karate Kid films. Luke Perry plays Lane Frost, with Stephen Baldwin as Tuff Hedeman, Red Mitchell as Cody Lambert, Cynthia Geary as Kellie Frost, and James Rebhorn and Carrie Snodgress as his parents.
Released in February 1994, the film cost about 7 million dollars and took roughly 20 million worldwide, a solid return on its budget. On IMDb it holds a 6.6 rating from around 6,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.1 from a much smaller group of voters. A critics' rating of 5.2 from 14 reviews places it below both audience scores.
