Short description
George Banks has barely adjusted to life after his daughter Annie's wedding when he learns she is expecting a child, making him a grandfather. The news unsettles him, since he does not feel old enough for the role. Before he can come to terms with it, his wife Nina reveals that she, too, is pregnant. George's plan to sell the family home and move on quietly collapses, and both pregnancies soon take over the household, while the flamboyant party planner Franck Eggelhoffer adds further upheaval.
Charles Shyer directed the film, which he co-wrote with Nancy Meyers, who also produced. It followed the same team's Father of the Bride from 1991 and came fourth among the seven features Shyer directed, between I Love Trouble and The Affair of the Necklace. Steve Martin and Diane Keaton return as George and Nina, with Martin Short as Franck, Kimberly Williams-Paisley as Annie and Kieran Culkin as George's son Matty.
Released in December 1995, the sequel cost about 30 million dollars and took roughly 77 million dollars worldwide, a solid return. On IMDb it holds 6.1 from around 45,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from a much smaller sample of 839; both point to modest, steady approval rather than enthusiasm. Critics rated it 5.9 from 24 reviews, slightly below the audience scores, suggesting a film that pleased its audience about as much as reviewers expected.
What's left behind the scenes
- For the sequel, the set with the interior decorations of the main characters’ house had to be rebuilt from scratch. No one had even heard of a sequel during the making of the first film (“Father of the Bride,” Charles Shyer, 1991), so the set was dismantled after filming. The new set had to be constructed entirely from memory and based on a few drawings that remained from the first film’s shooting.
- Diane Keaton was already almost 50 years old, and upon receiving the script for the sequel, she almost refused to star when she found out she would have to play a pregnancy. She had to be persuaded by Steve Martin and producer Nancy Meyers.
- In the film, Steve Martin’s character recalls playing basketball with his daughter in his backyard for the first time when she was 4 years old. However, the 1991 film "Father of the Bride" states that the Banks family bought the house when their daughter was already 5 years old.
