Jade
Short description
Jade is a crime thriller set in San Francisco. District Attorney David Corelli attends a party hosted by his friends Matt and Trina Gavin, a prominent lawyer and a psychiatrist, when he is called away to investigate the murder of a wealthy man. The case draws him toward a call-girl ring serving the city's elite, and the evidence increasingly points to Trina, who was once his lover. As Corelli pursues the investigation, he finds that powerful figures have reasons to keep the truth buried.
William Friedkin directed the film, the tenth of the sixteen features listed for him in chronological order, following Jailbreakers in 1994 and preceding 12 Angry Men in 1997. Joe Eszterhas wrote the screenplay with Friedkin, and Robert Evans, Gary Adelson and Craig Baumgarten produced. David Caruso plays Corelli, with Linda Fiorentino as Trina, Chazz Palminteri as Matt, Richard Crenna as Governor Edwards, Michael Biehn as Bob Hargrove and Donna Murphy as Karen Heller. The production was a large one, with a budget of 50 million dollars and hundreds of credited cast and crew, but it returned only about 10 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from roughly 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.5 from about 300 votes. A critics' rating of 4.2 from 34 reviews places it below even those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Linda Fiorentino rejected the script, stating that she did not want to play a prostitute. However, after changes were made to her character as the script was reworked, the actress changed her mind.
- According to Joe Eszterhas's autobiography, who wrote the screenplay, he was extremely dissatisfied with the finished film. Director William Friedkin made so many changes to the script that Eszterhas at one point threatened to demand his name be removed from the credits. Paramount Pictures managed to dissuade him. Friedkin himself later admitted that he had practically rewritten the script, but also stated that the result was one of his most beloved films that he had ever directed.
- Angie Everhart initially filmed a provocative scene, but then changed her mind, and the scene had to be reshot with a body double.
