Short description
Saw V continues the story of the Jigsaw killings after John Kramer's death. Detective Mark Hoffman, played by Costas Mandylor, has taken up his mentor's work and is publicly praised as a hero, but FBI Agent Strahm, played by Scott Patterson, grows suspicious and begins digging into Hoffman's past. As that investigation closes in, Hoffman sets out to remove anyone who could connect him to the crimes, while another group of strangers is forced through a new set of deadly tests.
The film is directed by David Hackl, who had worked on earlier entries in the series in production design and here makes his debut as a director. It is the fifth instalment in the Saw franchise, written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, and it brings back Tobin Bell as Jigsaw alongside Betsy Russell as Jill, Julie Benz as Brit and Meagan Good as Luba. It was produced by Mark Burg, Gregg Hoffman and Oren Koules for Twisted Pictures and Mandate Pictures.
Made for around 11 million dollars, Saw V went on to take roughly 118 million dollars worldwide, a return that underlines how reliably the series performed at the box office. Audience reaction was moderate: it holds a rating of 5.8 out of 10 on IMDb from about 147,000 votes and 6.2 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller base of roughly 3,900 votes. A critics' rating of 3.2 out of 10 from 75 reviews places it well below what viewers scored it. Hackl went on to direct Into the Grizzly Maze, Life on the Line, Daughter of the Wolf and Dangerous.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the scene where Agent Erickson (Mark Rolston) talks with Jill in his office, there is a real photograph of Rolston with his wife on his desk.
- In the scene where Jill is talking to the FBI agent in the office, a large shadow of a boom microphone is visible above their heads.
- In the film, Ericson constantly wears a Bluetooth headset. When Hoffmann calls him on Strom’s mobile phone, he answers without using it, and repeats this again when he tries to track Strom’s mobile phone.
- At the 41st minute of the film, when the Constructor is talking to the tied-up Hoffmann, doors in the background open and close from shot to shot.
- When Agent Strom is reviewing the list of victims and the detective's investigations, Daniel Matthews is listed as a victim who was found alive and well.
- Hoffmann steals Agent Strom’s mobile phone from the evidence and uses it to call Ericson. The latter answers the call, thinking it is actually Agent Strom. However, Ericson should have known that his phone was in evidence, and therefore someone else could have called from it.
- At the 11th minute of the film, an elderly woman in the waiting room is reading a magazine with an article titled “The Two Faces of the Constructor.” However, only the first paragraph of the article is about him; the rest is a repetition of text about workhouses.
- At the 24th minute of the film, the timer above the door begins its countdown from 15 minutes. When Charles points to the trap mechanism, a momentary glimpse during the camera pan reveals that the timer still reads 15 minutes.
- When Malik breaks the crate to retrieve the key at the 28th minute of the film, the timer on the wall shows 10 minutes and 57 seconds. When the test ends and the door to the room opens, the timer already reads 12 minutes and 48 seconds.
- At the 76th minute of the film, Jigsaw states that the human body contains 10 pints of blood (approximately 4.7 liters), and that it will continue to function if it loses half of that amount. This is an error, as the loss of 1.5 liters of blood is already fatal.
- The creators were inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Pit and the Pendulum” when creating Seth’s trap.
- Danny Glover was going to return to “Saw” for a small cameo as his character in a flashback, but he turned down the opportunity due to filming “Blindness”.
- At the 6th minute of the film, when the detective looks at the phone to call from the locked room, a flashing “No signal found” message appears on the display. Simultaneously, the indicator (top left) of the service on the screen shows a “full” level. Most likely, the message displays a standard screen saver.
- At the 17th minute of the film, when Hoffman looks at a newspaper clipping with the headline “Saw Found Dead,” you can notice that the text of the article has nothing to do with the headline.
- According to the film's director David Hackel, to design the Constructor's new original traps, a DVD containing recordings of real industrial accidents, catastrophes, and road mishaps was used as visual reference material.
- One of the Constructor's traps was conceived by David Hackel's son.
