Nothing but Trouble

Chris Thorne, a wealthy financial publisher, offers to drive a lawyer, Diane Lightson, to Atlantic City, hoping to turn the trip into something more. Two flamboyant Brazilian siblings tag along for the ride. After their driver runs a stop sign in a small rural town, the group is pulled over by an overzealous officer and brought before the local justice of the peace, Alvin Valkenheiser, a 106-year-old who rules his isolated community as his personal domain.

Dan Aykroyd directed and wrote the film, his first time in the director's chair, and he plays the elderly judge, a role that required heavy makeup, as well as the judge's mute companion Bobo. John Candy appears as the policeman Dennis and also as Dennis's sister Eldona. Chevy Chase stars as Chris, with Demi Moore as Diane, Daniel Baldwin as Artie and Taylor Negron as Fausto Squiriniszu. Warner Bros. Pictures produced the film with Applied Action.

Released in February 1991, the film cost about 40 million dollars to make and returned roughly 9 million worldwide, a steep shortfall. On IMDb it holds a 5.2 rating from around 30,000 votes, and on TMDB a 5.3 from roughly 400 votes, so audiences have generally been unimpressed. The cast of 44 and crew of 60 put it in the range of a mid-sized studio production.
