City of Women

City of Women follows Snàporaz, played by Marcello Mastroianni, a self-assured womanizer who makes an advance on a stranger during a train journey. When she leaves the train in open countryside, he follows her, and his pursuit leads him to a large hotel hosting a feminist conference. There he finds himself surrounded by women who have little patience for him, and he wanders through a strange, dreamlike world in which women hold the power. The film is a fantasy comedy that drifts between reality and imagination rather than following a conventional plot.

Federico Fellini directed and co-wrote the film with Bernardino Zapponi, working from a story shaped by Fellini's own preoccupations. It was released in 1980, standing as the eighteenth of the twenty films he directed, coming after Amarcord and before Ginger and Fred. Mastroianni, a frequent collaborator of the director, leads a large credited cast of seventy-eight, among them Anna Prucnal, Bernice Stegers, Donatella Damiani and Ettore Manni as Dr. Xavier Katzone. Shot by Giuseppe Rotunno with production design by Dante Ferretti, the film runs 140 minutes and was produced in Italy and France.

On IMDb it holds a 7 out of 10 from just over three hundred votes, while a critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from nineteen reviews places critical and audience response fairly close together.
