Pippi Longstocking lives alone in her house, Villa Villekulla, with her horse and a monkey named Mr. Nilsson. When Tommy and Annika's parents go away, the two children stay with her, and the trio find a message in a bottle from Pippi's father, a sea captain who has fallen into the hands of pirates. Pippi sets out to rescue him, and the journey takes her and her friends across the South Seas toward the island where he is being held.
The film is a Swedish-West German family adventure directed by Olle Hellbom, who also wrote the screenplay, with Olle Nordemar producing. It is the third of four Pippi films Hellbom made in a two-year stretch, following Pippi Longstocking and Pippi Goes on Board in 1969 and preceding Pippi on the Run later in 1970. Inger Nilsson again plays Pippi, alongside Pär Sundberg and Maria Persson as Tommy and Annika and Beppe Wolgers as Captain Longstocking. The cast also includes Martin Ljung and Jarl Borssén.
Running 95 minutes, the film was released in January 1970 and belongs to the same series of adaptations of Astrid Lindgren's books. It holds a rating of 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb from around 6,000 votes, and the same score on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes.
