I Am Nevenka

I Am Nevenka tells the story of Nevenka Fernández, a young finance councillor in the Ponferrada city government around the year 2000. She becomes the target of persistent attention and pressure from the mayor, a man used to getting his way in both politics and his personal life. Although she hesitates to file a complaint, she knows that speaking out will cost her dearly: her colleagues keep their distance, much of the town turns against her, and the press treats her as if she were the one on trial. Her case became the first in Spain in which a woman won a court ruling against a powerful and popular politician over sexual and workplace harassment.

The film is directed by Icíar Bollaín, who wrote the screenplay with Isa Campo. It is her second feature, following Maixabel in 2021. Mireia Oriol plays Nevenka Fernández, with Urko Olazábal as Ismael, Ricardo Gómez as Lucas, Lucía Veiga as Charo Velasco, Font García as Adolfo and Martxelo Rubio as José Antonio Bustos. The credited cast runs to 48 performers. Spanish production companies Movistar+, Kowalski Films, Feelgood Media and Nva Peli AIE backed the 117-minute drama, which was released on 27 September 2024. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 1,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 76 votes.
