Miracle at St. Anna

Miracle at St. Anna is a World War II drama set in Tuscany in 1944, where four African American soldiers of the 92nd Infantry Division, known as the Buffalo Soldiers, become separated from their unit behind enemy lines. After one of them rescues an Italian boy, the men take shelter in a nearby village, where they find a measure of respect and equality they never experienced at home, and join local partisans and villagers in preparing for the German counterattack.

Spike Lee directed the film, the seventeenth of the twenty-six features listed in his filmography, following All the Invisible Children and preceding Red Hook Summer. James McBride wrote the screenplay, adapting his own novel, and the large credited cast of 142 includes Derek Luke, Michael Ealy, Laz Alonso, Omar Benson Miller, Pierfrancesco Favino and Valentina Cervi. Touchstone Pictures and 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks were among the production companies, with a budget of about 45 million dollars.

Released in September 2008, the film earned roughly 9 million dollars worldwide, a small fraction of its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from around 20,000 votes, and on TMDB a matching 6.1 from roughly 400 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 from 120 reviews places it close to the audience scores, indicating a mixed response across all three measures.
