Short description
A young Predator named Dek is cast out by his clan for being seen as too weak. In an effort to prove his worth and courage, he travels to the remote planet Genna to hunt the Kalisk, a creature known for its regenerative abilities and perceived invincibility. During his journey through a hostile environment, Dek forms an alliance with Thia, a damaged android. Together, they track the dangerous adversary across the wilderness.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, this action-adventure science fiction film is the third feature in his directorial career, following 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey. The movie features Elle Fanning as Thia and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as Dek. Produced by 20th Century Studios and other firms, the project had a budget of 105 million USD and earned 185 million USD at the worldwide box office.
The film has been received positively by both audiences and reviewers. It holds a 7.2 rating on IMDb from 133,000 votes and a 7.8 rating on TMDB from 3,677 votes. Film critics provided a rating of 7.2 based on 275 reviews, matching the score given by users on IMDb.
What's left behind the scenes
- The Yautja language was specifically created for the film by linguist Britton Watkins. Dimitrios Kolomatanis, who played the role of the Dec, initially expected to simply make up words on the spot after his audition, but ultimately had to learn a new language for filming.
- Unlike previous films in the franchise, the Dec’s face was not animatronic, but a product of digital technology, with facial muscle movements captured using motion capture technology.
- According to director and screenwriter Dan Trachtenberg, the relationship between the Dec and Elle Fanning’s character was inspired by the video game Shadow of the Colossus.
- Preparing for filming, Dimitrios Kolomatangis practiced navigating a special obstacle course.
- Initially, actor Dimitrios Kolomatangis did not expect to have to carry Elle Fanning on his back, as he thought that scenes involving a legless robot would be realized using computer graphics. However, in reality, it took the actors and stunt performers about a month to develop a suspension system and find the most suitable angles and movements to believably portray Deck carrying Tia on his shoulders.
- According to actor Dimitrios Kolomatangis, during the audition for the role of Deck, actors were required to navigate an obstacle course in character and portray the Predator twice: first in English, and then in a fictional language. To pass the second part of the audition, Dimitrios mixed words from the Samoan and Tongan languages, and also added invented phrases.
