Short description
Lonely Hearts is a crime drama set in the late 1940s, following two detectives as they pursue a couple who lure victims through newspaper personal advertisements. Ray Fernandez poses as a romantic suitor, and together with Martha Beck he defrauds and then kills the women who respond. Detectives Elmer Robinson and Charles Hilderbrandt close in on the pair, and the case leaves a lasting mark on Robinson.
The film is based on the true story of Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez, known as the Lonely Hearts Killers. Todd Robinson wrote and directed it, his second feature after Amargosa and the first of his films to be followed by Phantom and The Last Full Measure. John Travolta and James Gandolfini play the detectives, with Jared Leto and Salma Hayek Pinault as the killers, supported by Scott Caan and Laura Dern among a credited cast of 22.
Released in 2006, the film runs 108 minutes and is a German-American co-production made by Millennium Media, EFO Films, Emmett/Furla Films and Nu Image Entertainment. It took in about 3 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. Audiences are divided: on IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from 42 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1/10 from 394 votes.
