Cop & ½

Eight-year-old Devon Butler dreams of becoming a police officer. When he turns out to be the only witness to a murder tied to drug dealers, he offers the police a deal: his testimony in exchange for a badge, handcuffs and a day riding along with a real detective. Nick McKenna, a veteran officer who prefers to work alone and has little patience for children, is assigned to look after the boy. What starts as a reluctant arrangement turns serious when Devon tries to investigate the case himself and puts himself in danger.

Henry Winkler directed the film, working from a screenplay by Arne Olsen, with Paul Maslansky producing for Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment. Burt Reynolds plays McKenna, and Norman D. Golden II plays Devon. Ruby Dee, Holland Taylor, Ray Sharkey and Sammy Hernandez appear in supporting roles. Released in April 1993, the film runs 93 minutes and mixes action and comedy with family-friendly material.

Made for about 14 million dollars, it took in roughly 41 million dollars worldwide, a solid return on its production cost. Audience scores are modest: on IMDb it holds 4.2 out of 10 from around 9,600 votes, and on TMDB 4.6 out of 10 from about 169 votes.
