This historical drama focuses on the relationship between Mahatma Gandhi, a proponent of non-violence, and Nathuram Godse, a journalist and nationalist. The story follows Godse over three decades during the movement for Indian independence, charting his transformation from a dedicated follower of Gandhi to a radicalized man. The narrative culminates in the 1948 encounter in Delhi where Godse killed the leader.
The film was produced by the National Theatre and directed by Indhu Rubasingham, who later directed National Theatre Live: The Misanthrope in 2026. It features a screenplay by Anupama Chandrasekhar and a credited cast of 20 performers. The lead roles are played by Hiran Abeysekera as Nathuram Godse and Paul Bazely as Mohandas Gandhi. Other cast members include Marc Elliott as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Ayesha Dharker as Aai, Ravi Aujla as Baba, and Azan Ahmed in the roles of Daulat and a British Policeman. With a runtime of 130 minutes, the production blends elements of drama and history to explore the political tensions of the era.
