Below is a World War II horror mystery set aboard the American submarine USS Tiger Shark. The vessel is sent to pick up survivors from a sunken British hospital ship, among them a woman, whose presence unsettles the crew. German submarines patrol nearer the surface, forcing the boat to stay deep, and the cramped, sealed interior becomes the stage for mounting tension and strange occurrences that the men struggle to explain. The film leaves open whether these events come from the mind or from something else in the water.

David Twohy directed, working from a screenplay he wrote with Darren Aronofsky and Lucas Sussman; Aronofsky also produced. It followed Twohy's Pitch Black and came before The Chronicles of Riddick in his filmography. Bruce Greenwood plays the commanding officer, with Matthew Davis, Holt McCallany, Olivia Williams, Jason Flemyng and Zach Galifianakis among the cast.

Released in 2002, the film cost about 40 million dollars and returned roughly 3 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from over 23,000 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from more than 500 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 70 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
