Suspect

A Supreme Court justice takes his own life, and soon afterward his secretary is found murdered. Suspicion falls on Carl Wayne Anderson, a deaf-mute homeless veteran, and public defender Kathleen Riley is assigned to represent him. Convinced he may be innocent, she starts looking into the case herself. She receives help from an unexpected source: Eddie Sanger, a Washington lobbyist serving on the jury, who has doubts of his own and passes her information even though a juror is not supposed to contact a defense attorney. Their inquiries point toward a conspiracy reaching high into the government.

Peter Yates directed the film, the eleventh of the thirteen features he made, following The Dresser and preceding An Innocent Man. Eric Roth wrote the screenplay, and Daniel A. Sherkow produced. Cher plays Riley, with Dennis Quaid as Sanger and Liam Neeson as Anderson; John Mahoney, Joe Mantegna and Philip Bosco appear in supporting roles. The film was released in October 1987 and took about 19 million dollars worldwide.
