Mary Mason is a medical student who cannot cover the cost of her studies. Looking for work, she ends up in the underground world of illegal surgery and body modification, where clients pay well for extreme procedures. Her circumstances push her deeper into that world, and the work begins to affect her far more than it affects the people she operates on.
American Mary was directed by Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska, who also wrote the screenplay. It was their first feature as directors and the earliest entry in a filmography that continued with See No Evil 2, Vendetta, Rabid and Festival of the Living Dead. Katharine Isabelle plays Mary, with Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk, David Lovgren, Paula Lindberg and Clay St. Thomas in supporting roles. The film was produced by John A. Curtis and Evan Tylor through IndustryWorks Pictures, 430 Productions, Twisted Twins Productions and Evolution Pictures. It runs 102 minutes and was released in January 2013.
Reception was moderate. On IMDb and TMDB, the film holds ratings in the middle range, with roughly six hundred votes on TMDB. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 52 reviews places professional assessment close to the audience response, suggesting a film that drew interest without broad acclaim.
