The Big Bounce
Short description
The Big Bounce is a crime comedy set in Hawaii, where Jack Ryan, a surfer and small-time thief, drifts through life on the islands. After losing a construction job, he is taken on at a small hotel resort run by a judge, Walter Crewes. There he meets Nancy Hayes, a woman with legal trouble behind her, who draws him into a plan to rob a wealthy local developer of $200,000. Jack's involvement with Nancy puts him at odds with the developer and complicates his position with the judge who gave him work.
George Armitage directed the film, his fourth feature after Hot Rod, Miami Blues and Grosse Pointe Blank. Sebastian Gutierrez wrote the screenplay, and Jorge Saralegui, Steve Bing and Armitage produced it. Owen Wilson plays Jack, with Morgan Freeman as Judge Crewes, Sara Foster as Nancy Hayes, Gary Sinise as Ray Ritchie and supporting turns from Willie Nelson and Vinnie Jones among a credited cast of 26.
Released in January 2004, the film had a budget of $50 million and returned about $7 million worldwide. Its audience rating on TMDB stands at 5 out of 10 from 283 votes, while a critics' rating averages 4.2 out of 10 from 134 reviews, so reviewers rated it somewhat below the general audience.

- The role of Bob Rogers Jr. could have gone to Matt LeBlanc, but it later went to Charlie Sheen.
- Filming began on October 28, 2002, in Hawaii. Production was halted for two weeks due to an intestinal infection contracted by director George Armitage. Filming concluded on January 6, 2003.
- The film is based on Elmore Leonard's work "The Big Bounce," which had been adapted for the screen before in 1969. Ryan O'Neal played the lead role in that film, and it was set in a small town in Michigan.
