Ruby and Quentin is a French-Italian crime comedy about two men who could hardly be more different. Ruby is a hardened robber and a man of few words, jailed after hiding the proceeds of his last job. Quentin is a giant with an endless stream of talk and a talent for getting on everyone's nerves. The two end up sharing a cell, and when they break out together, Ruby cannot seem to shake his unwanted companion. Ruby has one goal: to find the partners who betrayed him and avenge the woman he loved, and to recover the money he stashed away. Quentin, meanwhile, dreams of opening a cafe and treats Ruby as a friend, however little Ruby wants one. The prison psychiatrist, a commissioner and a dangerous criminal named Vogel all figure in the chase.
Francis Veber wrote and directed the film, which came out in 2003. It followed The Dinner Game and The Closet in a run of comedies he made about mismatched men thrown together, and it sits between The Closet and The Valet in his filmography. Gérard Depardieu plays Quentin and Jean Reno plays Ruby, with Richard Berry, André Dussollier, Jean-Pierre Malo and Leonor Varela in supporting roles. The film runs 85 minutes. Made for a reported 27 million dollars, it took in about 28 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 7.1 rating from roughly 32,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.7 from around 929 votes, so viewers on both services place it in similar, mildly favourable territory.
