Short description
Tom Ludlow is a Los Angeles police detective still reeling from his wife's death, working the way he always has and answering to a captain who shields him from the department's internal scrutiny. When evidence ties him to the killing of a fellow officer, and it becomes clear that those responsible wear badges themselves, he turns against the police culture he has belonged to his whole career and starts questioning whom among his colleagues he can trust.
David Ayer directed the film, which followed his 2005 debut Harsh Times in his filmography, working from a screenplay he wrote with Kurt Wimmer, Jamie Moss and crime novelist James Ellroy. Keanu Reeves plays Ludlow, with Forest Whitaker as Captain Jack Wander, Chris Evans as Detective Paul Diskant, Hugh Laurie as Captain James Biggs, Naomie Harris as Linda Washington and Cedric the Entertainer as Scribble. The production, backed by Fox Searchlight Pictures, Regency Enterprises and others, was made for about 20 million dollars and took roughly 66 million worldwide.
Audience response has been middling to positive. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 127,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of voters. Critics were less enthusiastic, giving it 5.3 out of 10 across 151 reviews, well below the marks viewers gave it.

- Filming took place in Los Angeles from May 21, 2007.
- James Ellroy wrote a screenplay treatment in the mid-90s, inspired by the O.J. Simpson trial. Since then, Oliver Stone, Spike Lee, and David Fincher have been involved in working on the film, and Sean Penn was originally slated to play the lead role.
- During the shootout in the store, Tom Ludlow wounds Washington in his right shoulder blade, and later reads in the ballistic examination results that the bullet was extracted from the left shoulder blade.
