The Snapper

Sharon Curley is twenty years old and still living at home in a crowded Dublin household with her parents and a large brood of siblings. When she becomes pregnant, the family's ordinary, noisy routine is thrown into disarray. Sharon refuses to identify the father, and her silence turns a private matter into public property, with neighbours and townspeople speculating about who he might be. The film follows how each member of the family reacts to the news and how they close ranks around her.

Stephen Frears directed the film, the seventh of twenty-three features in his career in chronological order, following Hero and preceding Mary Reilly. Roddy Doyle wrote the screenplay, adapting his own novel, and Lynda Myles produced. Colm Meaney plays the father, Dessie Curley, with Tina Kellegher as Sharon and Ruth McCabe as her mother, Kay; Eanna MacLiam, Peter Rowen and Joanne Gerrard appear among the siblings, and the credited cast runs to forty-seven.

Released in August 1993, the film took about three million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from more than five thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.5 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 from thirty-one reviews places it slightly above the audience score on IMDb.
