Hellraiser: Hellworld
Short description
A group of devoted players of Hellworld, an online game built around the Hellraiser mythology, receive an invitation to an exclusive party tied to the game's website. They arrive at a remote mansion expecting a celebration with fellow fans, but the gathering turns into a night of terror. Cut off from one another, each of them faces frightening experiences that seem to blur the line between the game and reality.
The film is the eighth entry in the Hellraiser series and the third directed by Rick Bota, following Hellraiser: Hellseeker and preceding Hellraiser: Deader in his run on the franchise. Carl V. Dupré wrote the screenplay, with Ron Schmidt producing for Dimension Films, Miramax and Castel Film. The cast includes Katheryn Winnick, Christopher Jacot, Henry Cavill, Khary Payton, Anna Tolputt and Lance Henriksen as the host. Made for about 5 million dollars and running 95 minutes, it mixes horror with fantasy, science fiction and thriller elements.
Reception has been weak: on IMDb it holds a rating of 4.2 from roughly 14,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 4.6 from around 400 votes. A small sample of critics rated it 3.3, slightly below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- A Tarot deck appears in the film, where the XIII arcana (Death) is depicted as Pinhead.
- All the characters who attend the party at the ominous house use the same model of phone – a Nokia 3310.
- At the 12th minute of the film, it is visible that while driving on the highway and then through the forest, the front license plate on the Ford is missing. In the next frame, a plate with the number B16*ZPI, formatted according to EU standards, is installed on the front bumper. At the 13th minute, when the group arrives at the party, an American-format license plate KAZ 40H8 is already visible at the front.
- Lance Henriksen auditioned for the role of Larry Cotton in the first part of "Hellraiser", but ultimately turned down the role.
