Big Business

Two pairs of identical twin girls are born on the same night in the small town of Jupiter Hollow during the 1940s. One pair belongs to a local family of modest means, the other to a wealthy family passing through, and a distracted nurse mixes the babies up without anyone noticing. Decades later, the mismatched sisters cross paths in New York: Rose and Sadie Ratliff, country women who have never resembled each other, come face to face with Rose and Sadie Shelton, who run a large corporation and look exactly like them. The four women become tangled in a case of mistaken identities that draws in their business associates and suitors as well.

Jim Abrahams directed the comedy, his fourth feature after Airplane!, Top Secret! and Ruthless People, from a screenplay by Dori Pierson and Marc Reid Rubel. Bette Midler plays both Sadie Ratliff and Sadie Shelton, and Lily Tomlin plays both Rose Ratliff and Rose Shelton. Fred Ward, Edward Herrmann, Michele Placido and Daniel Gerroll appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of 25.
