What Maisie Knew

In New York City, a young girl named Maisie is caught between her divorcing parents, a rock star whose career has stalled and an art dealer consumed by his work. As the two fight over custody, neither has much time for the everyday tasks of raising a child, and Maisie is often left in the care of others. Her father's new wife, Margo, a former nanny, and her mother's new partner, the bartender Lincoln, become the adults who provide her with steady attention while her parents remain absorbed in their own lives and in their dispute.

The drama was directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the filmmaking pair whose earlier feature "Bee Season" was released in 2005. Their two later collaborations, "Montana Story" and "The Friend," followed this film. Carroll Cartwright and Nancy Doyne wrote the screenplay. Julianne Moore plays Susanna and Steve Coogan plays Beale, with Alexander Skarsgård as Lincoln, Joanna Vanderham as Margo, and Onata Aprile as Maisie.

Made for a budget of 6 million dollars, the film earned about 3 million dollars worldwide, and its theatrical returns fell short of its production cost.
