Short description

The upcoming drama thriller The Social Reckoning follows Frances Haugen, a young engineer at Facebook. She teams up with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz to uncover and expose the most guarded internal secrets of the social media platform. Their journey focuses on the company's private practices, including the spread of misinformation, the effect of the network on teenage mental health, and links to the January 6 Capitol events.

The film is written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, following his previous work on Molly's Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Being the Ricardos. Sorkin also served as a producer alongside Todd Black and Peter Rice. The cast features Mikey Madison as Haugen and Jeremy Allen White as Horwitz, with Jeremy Strong appearing as Mark Zuckerberg. The ensemble includes Wunmi Mosaku as Raya, Betty Gilpin as Kris, and Billy Magnussen as Teddy. Produced in the United States by Columbia Pictures, TSG Entertainment, Alcon Entertainment, and Escape Artists, the movie has a runtime of 112 minutes and is scheduled for release on October 7, 2026.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The project was announced in June 2025 as The Social Network Part II and got its current title that September.
  • Jesse Eisenberg declined to play Mark Zuckerberg again, saying he had “outgrown” the role. It went to Jeremy Strong, who built his performance independently of his predecessor’s.
  • Jeremy Strong and Jeremy Allen White never shared the set: their characters exist in separate strands of the story.
  • The film was shot in Vancouver under the working title Goliath; the studio describes it as a David-and-Goliath story.
  • Cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth also shot The Social Network (2010).
  • Aaron Sorkin held the first public screening on 17 September 2026 in Silicon Valley, close to Meta’s headquarters, followed by a Q&A with journalist Kara Swisher.
  • The screenplay draws on Jeff Horwitz’s Wall Street Journal investigative series The Facebook Files, built on documents passed to him by former Facebook data engineer Frances Haugen.
