Barbie: The Princess & the Popstar is an animated musical about two young women who envy each other's lives. Tori is the princess of the kingdom of Meribella, tired of royal duties and eager to sing and dance instead. Keira is a popstar who dreams of life in a palace. When Keira visits the kingdom, the two become friends, discover a magic secret that makes them look alike, and swap places. Each soon finds that the other's life has its own drawbacks, and they learn to value being themselves. A threat to the kingdom's protective spell tests their friendship.
The film was directed by Ezekiel Norton, its third of five Barbie titles in the facts, following Barbie: Princess Charm School and preceding Barbie: The Pearl Princess, Barbie in Princess Power and Barbie Video Game Hero. Steve Granat and Cydne Clark wrote the screenplay, and Shawn McCorkindale and Shelley Dvi-Vardhana produced it for Mattel and Rainmaker Entertainment. Kelly Sheridan provides Tori's speaking voice, with Jennifer Waris singing; Ashleigh Ball speaks for Keira, with Tiffany Giardina singing. Ellie King and Peter Kelamis round out the cast.
Released in September 2012, the 86-minute film is rated 6 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 3,800 votes, while on TMDB it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 650 votes. The smaller TMDB sample is noticeably warmer toward the film than the larger IMDb group.
