Short description
Jerry Shaw is a young man drifting through life, working at a copy shop and estranged from his family, when he learns that his twin brother has died. He returns home to find his apartment filled with weapons and forged documents, and then his phone rings. A woman he has never met orders him to follow her instructions, backing her demands with threats and with an apparent ability to watch his every move through ordinary technology. Rachel Holloman, a single mother, is pulled into the same trap when her son's safety is used to force her cooperation. Branded as terrorists and hunted by federal agents, the two strangers have to work together to learn who is directing them and why.
D. J. Caruso directed the film, his fifth feature after Disturbia, working from a screenplay by Travis Wright, John Glenn and Hillary Seitz. Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan play Jerry and Rachel, with Rosario Dawson, Michael Chiklis, Anthony Mackie and Ethan Embry among a large credited cast.
Made for a budget of 80 million US dollars, the film took about 179 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 201,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from around 3,200 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 4.8 out of 10 from 181 reviews, lower than the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- "Eagle Eye" (original American title) was based on a story by Steven Spielberg, who was originally intended to direct the film. However, the director became occupied with "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (2008) and handed the reins to Caruso, remaining only as an executive producer.
- Filming began on November 6, 2007, and was completed in February 2008.
- When the characters in the film lock themselves in a Pentagon room and turn off all sound-transmitting devices, Aria hears them through the vibrations of coffee on the table. For the liquid to vibrate with such amplitude from sound, people would have to speak with an unrealistically low bass and not just shout, but try to outshout a jet plane taking off!
- When Jerry finds a weapon in the room, among the passports is a passport of a citizen of the USSR, which doesn't make sense, as this state had long ceased to exist by the time the film takes place.
- In the film, you can spot a DVD of "Paranoia" (2007), a previous work by Caruso and Shia LaBeouf.
- When the list of films that Jerry Shaw supposedly bought or rented most often appears, you can notice such films as "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004), "Fight Club" (1999), "City of God" (2002), and two films by Stanley Kubrick: "Full Metal Jacket" (1987) and "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968).
- In the appliance department, where Rachel and Jerry walk, the film "Cloverfield" (2008), released in the spring of the same year, is playing on all the screens.
- Judging by the name, the explosive "hexamethylene" is ordinary cyclohexane (a harmless liquid, with properties similar to gasoline).
