Short description
A veteran Hong Kong detective, Chan, is caring for the daughter of a witness killed on the orders of a ruthless crime boss, Wong Po. With his health failing and retirement approaching, Chan pursues Po with methods that increasingly ignore the rules. Into this enters Ma, a martial arts specialist assigned to take over Chan's unit, whose own approach puts him on a collision course with both the gang and his superiors.
Wilson Yip directed the film, working from a screenplay he wrote with Jack Ng Wai-Lun and Szeto Kam-Yuen; Carl Chang produced. It followed Yip's The White Dragon (2004) and preceded Dragon Tiger Gate (2006), Flash Point (2007) and the Ip Man films in his filmography. Donnie Yen, who also handled the action, plays Ma Kwun, with Simon Yam as Chan, Sammo Hung as Wong Po, Wu Jing as the killer Jack, and Liu Kai-Chi and Danny Summer in supporting roles. Twenty-two cast members are credited.
The film runs 93 minutes and is an action crime thriller set in Hong Kong and Macau. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from roughly 365 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from five reviews places it broadly in line with those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film's script was altered somewhat with the addition of Donnie Yen to the cast. Yen was the fight choreographer, so he demanded additional funding to film the fight scenes as they were written in the script. The result was the now-famous fight scenes featuring Jackie Wu and Sammo Hung.
- Initially, Wilson Ip planned to also film the story of the relationship between Sammo Hung and Jackie Wu, but this idea had to be abandoned due to financial considerations.
