Hanami

Set on a remote volcanic island that most residents wish to flee, the story follows a girl named Nana. Her mother, Nia, left the island shortly after Nana was born, leaving her to be raised by her father's family. When Nana suffers from high fevers, she is sent to the base of a volcano for medical treatment. In this location, she experiences a surreal existence where the boundaries between dreams and reality blur. The narrative eventually leads to Nia's return to the island once Nana has reached her teenage years.

This drama and fantasy production was directed by Denise Fernandes, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Telmo Churro. The film features Sanaya Andrade and Daílma Mendes in the dual role of Nana at different ages, alongside Alice Da Luz Gomes as Nia. The project was a collaboration between companies from Cape Verde, Portugal, and Switzerland, involving a credited crew of 46 people. With a runtime of 96 minutes, the film explores themes of family and belonging through a lens of magical realism.
