Short description
Tinker Bell is a 2008 animated adventure from DisneyToon Studios, made with Prana Animation Studios. It introduces Pixie Hollow, a kingdom where every fairy is born with a particular talent and where the fairies as a whole keep nature running: they colour the leaves, melt the snow and rouse the animals from their winter sleep so that the seasons can turn. Tinker Bell, a young fairy whose gift lies in fixing pots and kettles, believes her own talent matters far less than those of her friends Rosetta, Silvermist, Fawn and Iridessa. When she tries to take on their work instead, she causes disruption rather than help, and only by accepting what she truly is does anything magical come of it.
The film was directed by Bradley Raymond, who wrote the screenplay with Jeffrey M. Howard and produced it with Jeannine Roussel, and it follows several earlier directorial credits including Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame II and The Lion King 1½; Raymond later returned to the same series for Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue and Pixie Hollow Games. Mae Whitman voices the title character, with Kristin Chenoweth, Raven-Symoné, Lucy Liu, America Ferrera and Jane Horrocks among the voice cast, twenty performers in all.
Made for a reported 48 million dollars, it took about 9 million at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 19,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from around 1,600 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 out of 10 from eleven reviews sits close to those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Originally intended for release on DVD and Blu-ray, the cartoon was nevertheless released in cinemas in some countries, including Russia.
- Fairy Valley, as depicted in the animated film, differs significantly from the world of fairies in the original books and comics. In particular, the latter lack the idea of fairies participating in natural phenomena and the changing of the seasons.
- In addition to Tinker Bell and Wendy Darling, several characters from the original series appear in the animated film: Queen Clarion, Vidia, and Terence. Other characters were created specifically for the film, but subsequently some of them also became part of the book series.
- After the attack by the hawk, Vidia's face resembles that of Zuko from the animated series *Avatar: The Last Airbender* (2005-2008).
- When Tinker Bell flies away from the fireflies, Iridessa shouts, "Fly, Tinker Bell, fly!" This is a reference to the phrase "Run, Forrest, run!" from the film "Forrest Gump" (1994).
