Short description

Hellboy, Liz Sherman and Abe Sapien are sent to look into paranormal disturbances at a mansion owned by a publicity-seeking millionaire. What begins as a haunting case turns into something larger: a scheme to bring back a vampire woman from Professor Bruttenholm's past. Hellboy Animated: Blood and Iron sets its heroes against a range of creatures as they try to stop the plan before it costs more lives.

The film is a 2007 animated feature directed by Victor Cook and Tad Stones, from a screenplay by Kevin Hopps. It sits in the middle of Cook's run of animated films and near the end of the features Stones directed. Ron Perlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones reprise their live-action roles in voice form as Hellboy, Liz and Abe, with John Hurt as Professor Bruttenholm and Peri Gilpin as Kate Corrigan.

At about seventy-five minutes, it is a compact action and horror story aimed at a television audience. On IMDb it holds a 6.6 rating from roughly 4,700 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from around 156 votes. The two audience scores are close, indicating a modest but consistent response, with the much larger IMDb sample suggesting the film reached a wider viewership there.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the late 17th century, Erzsébet Báthory was said to have killed girls using the 'iron maiden,' a device for torture and execution. In reality, the invention of the 'iron maiden' dates back to the late 18th century.
