Day & Night
Short description
Day & Night is a short animated film about two characters who embody opposite halves of the day. Day is bright and cheerful, with sunshine and green fields visible inside his body, while Night is darker and quieter, showing a moonlit world. When the two meet, they are wary of each other and quickly fall into conflict. Over time, each begins to notice what the other has to offer, and their different views of the same world start to fit together, changing how both of them see things.
The film was directed by Teddy Newton, who also wrote the screenplay, with Kevin Reher producing. It was made by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar and runs six minutes. Its visual idea, in which the two figures' interiors reveal contrasting landscapes, sets it apart from conventional animated shorts. Wayne Dyer provides the voice of a radio lecturer, heard through archival sound and uncredited.
Released in June 2010, the short has been widely seen and well received. On IMDb it holds an 8 out of 10 from around 21,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.7 out of 10 from roughly a thousand votes. The larger IMDb sample still points to a strong response, and the closeness of the two scores suggests that both general audiences and the TMDB community regard it favorably.
What's left behind the scenes
- The cartoon was shown before the feature-length animated film "Toy Story 3" (2010).
- Unlike previous Pixar shorts, the animation combines 2D and 3D elements. This is the second Pixar film to use 2D graphics (the first was "Your Friend the Rat" (2007)).
- Besides ambient sounds (nature, passing airplanes, etc.), the only words spoken in the cartoon are excerpts from a radio broadcast. The radio broadcast in the cartoon is taken from a lecture by Dr. Wayne Dyer, a motivational speaker. Director Teddy Newton recalled listening to his recordings in his youth and decided to include an excerpt in his film.
