Mama
Short description
Two young sisters, Victoria and Lilly, vanish into the woods on the day their parents are killed. Five years later they are found alive in a derelict cabin, feral and frightened, and taken in by their uncle Lucas and his girlfriend Annabel. As Annabel tries to give the girls a normal home, she becomes convinced that something else came out of the woods with them — a presence the children call Mama, which grows hostile whenever their bond with their new guardian is threatened.
Mama is a Spanish-Canadian horror film directed by Andy Muschietti, his first feature, from a screenplay he wrote with Neil Cross and Bárbara Muschietti; J. Miles Dale and Bárbara Muschietti produced. Jessica Chastain plays Annabel, with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Lucas, Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nélisse as the sisters, Daniel Kash as Dr. Dreyfuss and Melina Matthews as the voice of Mama.
Released in January 2013 and running 100 minutes, the film was made for about 15 million USD and took roughly 146 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from around 200,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3/10 from 4,512 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.9/10 from 167 reviews — audiences and critics landing in much the same place. Muschietti went on to direct It, It Chapter Two, The Flash and the series It: Welcome to Derry.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Annabelle hears the girls playing, she goes to their room to tell them it’s late and time for bed, but it is still light outside. There are also approximately 3 other scenes in the film where the plot requires it to be night, but it is daytime outside the windows.
- When Lily persuades Victoria to go to Mom, the position of her blanket changes after a cut.
- When little Victoria first enters the cabin, she steps in snow that clings to her feet, and it becomes apparent that it’s actually a white carpet.
- When Annabelle searches through Dr. Dreyfuss's computer, there's a typo in the folder name containing his research – “Reasearch” (it should be “Research”).
- Lucas rents a car from a company called “Enterprise,” but the car doesn't have a barcode visible on the window. All cars from this company have barcodes to speed up the registration process.
