Final Fantasy VII: Last Order

Final Fantasy VII: Last Order is a 25-minute anime short set in the world of Final Fantasy VII, several years before the events of the game. It centres on two members of SOLDIER, Zack and Cloud, who are hunted by the Shinra company after a mission near the town of Nibelheim ends in destruction. As they try to reach Midgar, the story looks back at what happened around the town's Mako reactor, drawing in Sephiroth, the SOLDIER who turns on his companions, and Tifa Lockhart, who follows them there. The narrative moves between the past events at Nibelheim and the pair's flight, with Tseng, commander of the Turks, connecting the two threads. The short stands as a companion piece to the game and to related entries in the wider Final Fantasy VII series.

It was directed by Tetsuya Nomura and Morio Asaka. For Nomura it followed Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children the same year, while Asaka's other directing work includes the Cardcaptor Sakura films and, later, Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card. Kazushige Nojima and Kazuhiko Inukai wrote the screenplay, and the voice cast includes Kenichi Suzumura, Toshiyuki Morikawa, Takahiro Sakurai, Ayumi Ito, Junichi Suwabe and Keiji Fujiwara, with twenty credited performers in all.

The film was produced by Madhouse with Square Enix, and audience scores place it modestly: 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb across roughly 1,700 votes, and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller sample.
