Persepolis

Persepolis is an animated drama about Marjane, a girl growing up in Tehran during a period of profound upheaval. As a child in the late 1970s, she follows the events that bring down the Shah's regime, a change her progressive family has long hoped for. What follows is an Islamic Republic that imposes new rules on how people dress and behave, and Marjane, outspoken and rebellious by nature, finds herself at odds with the society taking shape around her. Her parents eventually send her to Europe, where she confronts adolescence, freedom and loneliness far from home. The film is based on Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novels.

The film is a co-direction by Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, who also wrote the screenplay; it was their first feature as directors. The voice cast includes Chiara Mastroianni as the adult Marjane, Gabrielle Lopes Benites as the young Marjane, Catherine Deneuve and Simon Abkarian as her parents, and Danielle Darrieux as her grandmother.

Released in 2007, the film was made for about 7 million dollars and took roughly 23 million worldwide. On IMDb and TMDB, audience ratings sit around 7.9 out of 10 from more than two thousand votes, while a critics' rating of 8.2 out of 10 from 164 reviews places it noticeably higher with reviewers than with general viewers. The film runs 95 minutes.
