Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia continues the story of Elina, the fairy introduced in the previous year's Fairytopia. When her friend Nalu, a merman prince, is taken by the wicked Laverna, Elina travels to Mermaidia, the underwater realm of the merfolk, to free him. Laverna wants the prince because he holds something that could greatly increase her power. To succeed, Elina needs the cooperation of Nori, a mermaid who is suspicious of outsiders and reluctant to help. Reaching Nalu demands a serious sacrifice from Elina, one that puts her wings at risk.
The film is an animated family adventure from Mattel and Mainframe Entertainment, running 76 minutes, and was released in March 2006. It is the second Barbie Fairytopia title and follows directly from the 2005 first film. Walter P. Martishius directed both, while William Lau, who also directed the first, here makes the third of fifteen films in his directing credits, between Barbie: Fairytopia and Barbie Fairytopia: Magic of the Rainbow. Elise Allen wrote the screenplay, and the voice cast is led by Kelly Sheridan as Elina, with Kathleen Barr as Laverna, Chiara Zanni as Nori, Lee Tockar, Christopher Gaze and Andrea Libman in supporting roles.
Audience response has been moderately positive. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 5,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 out of 10 from about 750 votes. The two totals point to a steady following for the series rather than broad acclaim.
